5 super basic knitting rules I wish I had known when I started (knits, purls and working yarn)
Short and sweet part 3
I wanted to write a short post for those of you who are just beginning your knitting journey. These rules may seem obvious to some, but I truly wish I had known them when I started. They would have saved me so much time and confusion. So here they are for you:
5 super basic rules I wish I had known when I started knitting
The working yarn - the yarn that runs from your needle to the ball is attached to the last stitch you made (the last stitch on your right-hand needle, the one closest to the tip of your right-hand needle). So when you come back to your work, make sure to hold the needle with the last stitch worked in your right hand.
The working yarn comes off the back of a knit stitch and the front of a purl stitch.
Every stitch - knit and purl - has a front and a back leg. Each stitch should sit on the needle with the right leg in front. If the left leg is in front, the stitch is twisted.
The knit stitch looks like a ‘V’, and the purl stitch looks like a bump.
The back of every knit stitch is a purl stitch, and vice versa.
More posts like this coming soon.
Happy knitting!
